Eyelid Surgery

The cosmetic surgery procedure involving the removal of excess fat, excess skin, and muscle, from the upper and lower eyelids is called Blepharoplasty. In United Kingdom, Blepharoplasty is popular and considered to be the second most common cosmetic procedure performed by aesthetic surgeon.

Candidates for Eyelid Surgery

The best candidates for cosmetic surgery blepharoplasty are those that have realistic expectations of the cosmetic out come and are healthy mentally and physically. Patients with medical problems such thyroid dysfunction or allergies that has affected them eyes appearance, should seek alternative treatment rather then cosmetic surgery.

Before the surgery

Before proceeding with cosmetic surgery of the eyes, you will need to have a private consultation with a qualified cosmetic plastic surgeon. This consultative process is necessary to discuss your expectations and to learn about the risks and complications involved with blepharoplasty. It is important to discuss what impact the surgery should achieve. Some patients, for example, may only want to reduce the bags under the eyes without skin removal.

The surgery

Based on the out come of your cosmetic consultation and your expectation, the location of the incisions will be then chosen. Usually, the resulting scar will be as hidden as possible. During the surgery of the upper eyelids (upper blepharoplasty) the incision should be made in the natural crease. For the lower eyelids, an incision is normally made just underneath the lashes or inside the lower eyelid (depending on your clinical examination). Both positions allow for the scar to be well discreet. Usually, the scar will heal nicely into fine line. During the cosmetic procedure, the needed amount of excess skin and any herniated fat will be removed. Then, the skin is closed with stitches to be removed after 5 to 7 days. We always advise our patients, prior to cosmetic surgery, to arrange transportation home and to wear sunglasses when leaving the hospital. The cosmetic surgery would take place either at the Bridgewater hospital in Manchester or at the Highgate hospital in London.

After the surgery

Following your cosmetic surgery, it is normal to feel some soreness in the treated area. Bruising will appear and resolve within 10 days. Your cosmetic surgeon should be available to respond to any concern you may have while you are healing. We always advise our patient to try to keep the head elevated and limiting physical activity. Cold compresses can be helpful to reduce swelling and should be applied 2 to 3 times a days for 10 minutes. Rarely, after lower blepharoplasty the lower eyelid may be retract down causing so-called ectropion. Usually this does resolve within 4 to 6 weeks. If it does not resolve on its own further surgery may be necessary. The known complications of any cosmetic surgery procedure, such as bleeding, infection, wound break down and bad scarring are also possible, but rare.
