Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Abel Mounir offers labiaplasty in Manchester.

What is a Labiaplasty?

Manchester Cosmetic Centre

Labia Minora Reduction or Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size of the inner labia. However, labiaplasty is also designed to reduce the size of the labia majora. As one of the top board-certified plastic surgeons in the northwest, Dr. Abel Mounir has used his artistic eye and skillful approach to plastic surgery to successfully shape his practice.

Effectively, the labia majora can appear atrophic or deflated with excess skin due to aging or weight loss, and reduction of the excess skin can significantly improve the look. Generally speaking, patients may feel unhappy with the state of their labia because it causes them irritation and self-consciousness, especially if their labia is visible when wearing extremely tight or scanty clothing. An over-projecting labia is a primary reason some women experience discomfort during sexual intercourse and may cause difficulties with hygiene leading to infection.

Finally, the size of the labia could also make women feel self-conscious when with a partner. During your initial consultation for a labiaplasty Manchester plastic surgeon, Dr. Mounir, will make sure you understand that there is a very wide range of labial types and sizes which are seen in normal and happy women, so saying how much of the labia should be reduced is itself a difficult task. There are widely accepted surgical guidelines for labia minora reduction. However, the objective always includes tucking the labia within the confines of the Labia Majora.

The Consultation: Creating Your Plastic Surgery Plan

During your initial consultation in our Manchester Cosmetic Centre with Dr. Mounir, your past medical history will be assessed to see if you are fit and healthy to proceed with the surgery. Dr. Mounir will discuss with you very carefully your expectations and the limits of the labiaplasty. He will conduct a physical examination, so he can assess the size of your labia.

You will be given a mirror to hold in your hand so you can follow the examination steps and determine how much of your labia you would like to be reduced. Following the medical examination, Dr. Mounir will describe if other surgical solutions could be added with labiaplasty if needed. He will also answer all your questions and explain how to prepare yourself for the labia minora reduction.

How To Prepare For Your Labiaplasty

Dr. Mounir strives to deliver the best labiaplasty Manchester has to offer. After your medical examination and discussing your needs and your expectations, he will produce a surgical plan and aftercare for you. Your pre-op plan may include changes in your habits, so if you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking at least six weeks before your surgery.

Dr. Mounir will ask you to stop certain medications that may cause thinning of the blood, such as aspirin or Voltaren, which can lead to bleeding after surgery. The day before the surgery, you need to stop eating and drinking at midnight on the day of your surgery, especially if you are going to have general anesthesia. Please shave your pubic hair before the surgery. After labiaplasty Manchester patients will be given some medications to control the discomfort (although minimal). You will need to find someone adult to drive you home after your surgery.

Types of Anesthesia

Dr. Mounir uses EMULA cream before using a needle to inject the local anesthesia. Usually, you will feel some brief discomfort during the injection of the local anesthetic, but no pain is felt during the labiaplasty.

Oral medication such as valium can also be given to make you feel more comfortable. For more complex procedures, intravenous sedation is needed, so our Manchester labiaplasty patients do not experience any discomfort. Dr. Mounir works with only highly experienced NHS anesthesiologists.

Labiaplasty Surgery Techniques

The two most common labiaplasty techniques include the “trim” technique and the “wedge” technique. Dr. Mounir prefers the trim or “edge resection” technique in most instances.

Where Will The Surgery Be Performed?

The labiaplasty surgery is performed either at the first trust hospital in Preston or the Pall Mall Hospital in newton-le-willows.

Edge Resection Technique:

This is the most popular technique because it is the easiest method for reducing the size of the labia minora.

During your initial consultation, Manchester plastic surgeon Dr. Mounir will use a diagram to explain how the edge resection or trim technique is performed. The excess labial tissue is excised along the full edge of the labia minora. The disadvantage of this technique is that the pigmented edge of the labia is lost. Usually, the trim technique is indicated for patients with minimal labial over-projection.

Wedge Excision Technique

During this technique, Dr. Mounir will excise a wedge of the labia minora. One of the advantages of this technique is that you would keep the pigmented colour and wrinkly effect of the labia. The scars are hidden in the labia crease, making them less visible. Options include removal of a central wedge of tissue, an anterior wedge, a posterior wedge, or sometimes the combination of the excision of the anterior and posterior wedge. All these methods maintain the pigmentation of the labial edge.

Treatment of Labia Majora:

Often labia major can be treated by reducing the excess skin. Most surgeons start by excising a crescent of the inner aspect of the labia majora so that the scar will be hidden in the fold at the junction between the two sets of labia, the majora and minora. If the patient is complaining about the fact that her labia majora is flat or empty, then Dr. Mounir will usually recommend a fat transfer involving the injection of 20 cc of fat tissue harvested from another part of the body.

Hoodectomy

Some women wish to include a hoodectomy or clitoral hood reduction in their labiaplasty procedure. A hood reduction removes excess tissue surrounding the clitoris, leaving it more exposed and producing a more attractive appearance.

The Recovery Process

After your labiaplasty, Dr. Mounir takes photos at the end of your operation to show you before and after. These photos are taken only if you have signed the consent for Dr. Mounir to do so. You will notice stitches on both labia. These stitches are dissolvable. Dr. Mounir will also apply some antibiotic ointment on the incisions lines before covering them with a sterile dressing. You will need someone to accompany you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours. You should not take aspirin or Ibuprofen for another week. Please remove your dressing before using the toilet and make sure that you clean and dry the surgical site when you are done. Please replace the dressing with new sterile ones. Use a feminine liner to cover your dressing. Avoid tampons for two weeks. Sexual intercourse and self-stimulation should be avoided for six weeks. You will need five days off work.
