Labia Reduction 2019-09-09T18:54:19+01:00

Labiaplasty or the so-called Labia Minora reduction

After pregnancies and childbirth, aging or/and because of genetic overprotecting labia Minor, Women do feel self-conscious about the look of them labia especially when they are wearing tight clothes or in swimsuits.  Effectively, many studies have shown that labiaplasty surgery gives patients more self-confidence.

What You Should Know

How should your Labia look like?

It is important to understand that there is a wide range of labial sizes which are encountered in perfectly normal and asymptomatic women, so that defining how much the labia should be reduced is itself a difficult task. Although there are no widely accepted guidelines for labiaplasty, however, the goal is to tuck the labia within the confines of the Labia Majora.

What happened during your consultation?

Dr Mounir will examine your labia. He will use a pen to mark your excess labia can reduce.  Usually, Dr Mounir will also use different diagrams to explain to you the different techniques of Labiaplasty that have been described including de-epithelialization, direct excision, wedge resection, and composite reduction.

What are the different techniques of labiaplasty?

1) The edge resection technique:

The Edge resection technique is also called the linear method, is often used to improve the look of the vagina area. The overprojecting labia will be precisely trimmed. The resulting scar is usually well hidden and not visible. The objective of this technique is to remove the excess tissue that appears dark at the edges. Most surgeons prefer this technique because it is simple.

2) The wedge technique of labiaplasty can also be performed if there is excess skin around the clitoris. This is also recommended for patients with more over-projection in the middle part of the labia minora. The advantage of this technique is that the incision is placed within the natural folds of tissue and so the edge of the labia will stay unchanged.

How Long Before I Can Exercise or Have Sex?

Dr Mounir will advise to you start moving around immediately after the surgery to reduce the risk of thrombosis. However, do not resume any physical activities or even have sexual intercourse for at least four to six weeks after surgery.

Will my sexual partner notice a difference after my labiaplasty procedure?

It all will depends on how large was your labia prior to your surgery and whether he/she has noticed this fact before then, both of you will notice a difference after surgery.

Can I Become Pregnant After Labiaplasty?

Yes, Labiaplasty does not affect your ability to have children

When Can I Shower After Surgery?

Dr Mounir will ask you to have a shower after 2 to three days.

Will Sutures Need To Be Removed After Labiaplasty?

No, all the stitches are dissolvable

What are the Complications of Labia Reduction?

Any surgical operation carries risks no matter how small the procedure. Dr Mounir performs mainly edge resection technique. Poor scaring decrease on the sensitivity and poor wound healing are possible complications.

The technical disadvantages of the labial-edge resection technique are the loss of the natural rugosity (wrinkles) of the labia minora free edges, thus, aesthetically, it produces an unnatural appearance to the vulva, and also presents a greater risk of damaging the pertinent nerve endings.

Moreover, there also exists the possibility of everting (turning outwards) the inner lining of the labia, which then makes visible the normally hidden internal, pink labial tissues.

Asymmetry will stay after the surgery and you may be disappointed with the fact that your labia are uneven. Also you will still have excess skin in the lower part of the labia as well as around the clitoris.

Other complications:

BLEEDING: Dr Mounir will ask you not to take any aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications for ten days before surgery to reduce the risk of bleeding.

INFECTION: Dr Mounir will provide with Antibiotics during and after the surgery to prevent infection to happen.

SCARRING: The scars after labiaplasty are usually very acceptable and even hidden.

CHANGE IN SKIN SENSATION: This is a very possible complication.

DELAY HEALING: Wound healing is possible. Some areas of the labial skin may not heal normally and/or may take a long time to heal. It is even possible to have loss of skin. This may require frequent dressing changes or further surgery to remove the non- healed tissue. Smokers have a greater risk of skin loss and wound healing complications.

DAMAGE TO DEEPER STRUCTURES: This is potential if labiaplasty is combined with Vagina tightening.

UNSATISFACTORY RESULT – There is always the possibility of an unsatisfactory result from the surgery.

ADDITIONAL SURGERY: There is always a risk that you may need touch up surgery.

Hospital and Aftercare

The procedure typically takes about 1 hour under general anesthesia, the surgical area will remain numb between 8 and 72 hrs. Antibiotic ointment will be placed on the incision lines and you will be sent home with disposable underwear and pads for the first several days.

Please take multiple short walks (i.e. around the house) as soon as you feel steady on your feet. However, be very careful and do not resume any strenuous activities or have sexual intercourse for at least six to eight weeks after having a labiaplasty performed. This will be discussed further during your postoperative visits.

The stitches are normally dissolvable but your wound still needs to be reviewed after one week.
